PHNOM PENH, April 22, 2024 — The Ministry of Environment has announced plans to develop a green tourism corridor in Preah Jayavarman-Norodom Phnom Kulen National Park, located in Siem Reap province, aimed at enhancing sustainable tourism.

The announcement was made by Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth during a meeting focused on the development of green tourism destinations, held on April 18 at the ministry.

This ambitious project seeks to foster sustainable livelihoods for local communities within the national park's boundaries, while also prioritizing the efficient management of natural resources and biodiversity conservation. A key goal of the initiative is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2025.

Proposed developments for the green tourism corridor include the introduction of eco-friendly camping sites, traditional Khmer-style housing for accommodations, dedicated cycling paths, and other sustainable tourism products.

Minister Sophalleth has instructed his technical team to carry out a comprehensive feasibility study to inform the strategic planning necessary for the establishment of this corridor.

Preah Jayavarman-Norodom Phnom Kulen National Park is a renowned cultural and natural heritage site, boasting at least 85 attractions including picturesque waterfalls, ancient temples, and serene natural ponds. It is also home to 1,246 families, totaling 5,036 residents, who live within the park’s protected areas.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to integrate environmental sustainability with tourism, providing a model for conservation efforts in other national parks across Cambodia.
